My 7 must-have Breastfeeding Essentials

Are you planning on breastfeeding your baby? Or you already are and maybe you are struggling?, here are my list of 7 breastfeeding essentials;

  1. Lansinoh nipple cream


This magic stuff is at the top of my  breastfeeding essentials list for good reason. When you are first starting with breastfeeding it can be really painful with sore, dry, cracked nipples and a cluster feeding newborn. This stuff will soothe and keep you sane. You Can apply just before baby has a feed too. It’s a bit Pricey for a small tube, but you don’t need loads and it’s worth every penny. You can find out more about Lansinoh products here;


2. Large Muslins

There is no point in faffing around with those little muslin squares that come 5-10 in a pack. What you want is the really large Muslins, then they are multipurpose! The best found I have found is Mama Rules Muslins. These are giant, really soft, great quality and really cool designs including this tropical print one we were sent to try. I don’t always use a breastfeeding cover in public depending on where I am and how I am feeling that day, but I like to have the option to cover up if I want to.

I know that specific nursing covers/aprons are quite popular these days, but personally I don’t like them. I think they require more faffing to put on and its yet another thing to fit in your changing bag. Whereas you need to take muslins anyway, and these giant Mama Rules muslins are perfect for breastfeeding cover (they have a ribbon loop to attach to your bra).

Additionally you can use them for swaddling, a blanket to place baby on and even could use a sarong for yourself if weather appropriate! Austin personally loves having his as a light cover in the pram inside of blanket and likes to hold/play with it for comfort.



3. A nursing pillow-

Another breastfeeding essential when first starting is a nursing pillow , the hours can be long and it be difficult at times to get you and baby into correct position. I’ve used a few different nursing pillows but personally my favourite it the Hush Cush pillow, which I recently reviewed. Instead of a more traditional semi circle shape it is square with a sleeve to place your arm through. You can find out more about Hush Cush here;




4. Nipple/Breast pads-

unless you fancy walking around with 2 large wet patches on your chest on a regular basis then pads are a must. Before I had babies I had no idea that a) you would just leak when not feeding and b) the other boob would leak whilst feeding on one side. There are different pads you can get and most supermarkets do their own. Despite being more expensive I have definitely found the Lansinoh pads to be the best, most absorbent and stay in place the best. With the boots own brand ones coming a close second.



5. Breast Pump-

You are likely to want a pump a some point, either if you’re struggling with breastfeeding but still want to give breast milk for a time or because you want to go out and have a baby break. There are Loads of different types on the market. I have the Medela Swing pump which I bought second hand that came highly recommended, and I have to say it’s been great. If you’re looking for something more portable with no wires then the OmANI Portable breast pump is useful, you can find this on Amazon.




6. Chocolate!!-

If you are anything like me then you will get major sugar cravings whilst breastfeeding, combine this with sleep deprivation and hormones and you will be in dire need of some chocolate or equally naughty sweet treats e.g. biscuits. Obviously you could have more healthy snacks to keep up your energy levels like sesame seed snaps or other food closely resembling bird food! But where’s the fun in that! Plus I justify it to myself by knowing i’m burning lots of extra calories by breastfeeding. And you’ve just grown a human for 9 months and then pushed it out of your hoohoo or had major surgery for a sunroof removal, so you definitely deserve all the chocolate!!

7. Netflix subscription (or similar)-

spending hours on end marooned on the sofa with a newborn baby cluster feeding can be a pretty lonely and isolating affair, especially at the beginning. Therefore having access to some great TV is essential! Netflix was a lifesaver for me, gave me a chance to watch whole series of shows Id planned to watch but never got round to it before.





I know you may feel like this is a waste of time, and perhaps you should be doing something more productive with your time, this is how I felt anyway. BUT when you are out of the newborn stage and you have a crawler, then a toddler and then a child the only TV you’re likely to watch is cbeebies or milkshake Tv on 5, watching things like Thomas, Peppa Pig and Paw Patrol over and over until you find yourself singing the theme songs in the middle of Aldi!

    Interesting read.I breastfed my baby girl exclusively for 6 months. I couldn’t have gone by without a BF pillow. Sudocrem is an essential item for me up till now..

    I can’t even begin to imagine breastfeeding and how much you have to think about when you do it, especially when you go out x

    Haha you forgot to include boobs in the list of essentials 😉 Seriously though this is fab and so important to remind ourselves not to feel guilty for not getting anything done – we are doing the most important thing of all! xxx

    I couldn’t be without my breast pump and pads when breast feeding. They were necessities.

    Yes to the chocolate plus copious amounts of tea. Also WATER. So thirsty when feeding. I’m feeding my seven month old and as she’s now on solids her milk needs have reduced dramatically and I’m almost feeling left out!
